Student Workshops

  • Standing Up and Stepping Out ©
    At-risk students are often faced with challenges that hinder them from reaching their full potential and achieve the academic success of which they are capable. To succeed, they must be provided with the 21st Century skills which will motivate them to succeed, increase their resiliency, and enable them to create a safe space in which they can grow and mature. During this workshop students learn and practice these 21st Century leadership and life skills including: Developing and Nurturing Self-Esteem, Recognizing and Developing Solid Values, How to Make Good Decisions, Goal Setting, and Conflict Management. During the workshop students will create Action Plans as leaders in their lives and as members of their family, school, and community.

  • Transforming Challenges into Opportunities ©
    This workshop taps into the very special skills of our associate, Darryl Ordell, who makes leadership, conflict resolution, and respect for diversity come alive for students using techniques he mastered as a professional actor and facilitator. Using improvisational activities, role plays, and guided visualizations, students are put in "real life" situations they may face in school, at home or the community. Participants are encouraged to understand and "command space" through use of voice and movement, building the confidence necessary to make good decisions and successfully address internal and external issues of conflict.

  • Partnering for Progress: Changing At-Risk Youngsters into At-Promise Students
    This innovative and field tested program consists of a series of 10-18 full day sessions which focus on building the leadership, resiliency, and conflict management skills of students in the greatest need of social/emotional support to succeed academically. Each session builds on these skills and the related skills of communication, decision making, and a sense of responsibility to oneself and others in the school community. The facilitator works on action plans with students. Clear benchmarks are set and the progress of each student is closely monitored. The format of each day is be flexible, but includes:
    . Two 90 minute workshops (2 groups of 8-10 students/90 minute workshop) with the same facilitator/primary person. The workshops focus on skill building and action planning. The facilitator works collaboratively with students to develop three (3) to five (5) themes with measurable goals and objectives. Group discussions focus on the challenges and successes of meeting the goals of individual action plans and set clear expectations and timelines for next steps.
    . Meeting with teachers and individual students to gain insights into student behavior in the classroom and support students and teachers as students seek to implement their individual action plans created during the student workshops.
    . Meeting with the guidance team and the Dean to receive and provide feedback to jointly support the students' efforts in meeting the goals of their individual action plans created during the student workshops.
    Gender specific groups are recommended.

  • I Am In Control ©
    Uncontrolled anger can quickly result in very bad decision making. During this highly interactive workshop students take a close look at the "triggers" which often make them so angry they do things they later regret. Discussions and activities focus on understanding why we respond so negatively to these "triggers" and the importance of taking the time to choose how to respond more positively. Participants learn and practice skills and techniques to "stay in control" even under the most difficult circumstances. The workshop culminates in the creation of an Action Plan by each student setting out specific strategies they can incorporate into their daily lives to deal more successfully with their individual "triggers". Gender specific groups are recommended.

  • You Can Control Your Anger: Strategies for Dealing with Stressful Situations and People ©
    Anger is a universal and natural emotion. This workshop enables students to master the skills needed to manage this complex emotion and develop healthier ways of relating to others. Through interactive activities, role plays, and use of relevant examples, students learn practical, proven strategies for understanding emotions, dealing with angry feelings constructively and will learn how to let go and move on. Opportunities are build into the workshop to develop Action Plans to integrate these strategies into the students daily lives (Aligns with the parent workshop).

  • What If I Were Really Fearless? ©
    What are your fears, where did they come from, and how did they start? Are we afraid of failure or success? How can fear keep us from doing what is really important to us? How can we change our relationship with fear? In this highly interactive workshop students investigate their relationship with this most basic emotion and gain insights into how addressing their fears head on will assist them in achieving greater success in the classroom, at school, and in their community. The workshop culminates in the creation of an Action Plan by each student setting out specific strategies they can incorporate into their daily lives to overcome the real fears holding them back from success.

  • Communicating Effectively with Law Enforcement

    Miscommunication between adolescents and law enforcement officers sometimes results in minor issues inadvertently escalating into confrontations, and even suspensions and arrests. This highly interactive workshop engages youth in analyzing how this can happen, and provides them with specific strategies and conflict resolution skills to assist them when interacting with NYPD police officers and School Safety Agents (SSA's) in a manner that will result in more positive outcomes.

  • Choices and Consequences: Making Better Decisions ©
    The juvenile justice system sees all too many "good" kids who make really "bad" decisions. In a safe workshop setting, students have the opportunity to participate in frank discussions about the role and implications of fighting, truancy, gang involvement, and other issues which will bring them into negative contact with the criminal justice system. Through the use of real life role plays, and under the guidance of an experienced facilitator, students have an opportunity to take a look at better options that will keep them on the track to a successful future.

  • "You're a Racist"...Language Which Keeps Us Confused ©
    Children learn very early in life that words have the power to hurt or heal. In this this highly interactive workshop students use use music, current events, and share personal experiences as they collaboratively take a close look at the origins, historical context and meanings of highly charged words and phrases they hear every day including, "That's so gay.", "The N-word", "Minority", and "You're a racist!". Through honest discussions, in a safe and open learning environment, students gain insights and awareness around how language impacts their relationships with their peers, parents, and teachers.

  • Say What You Mean and Mean What You Say ©
    Inappropriate behavior is frequently the result of a lack of skills to express oneself in a socially appropriate manner. This highly interactive workshop empowers students to use age appropriate communication to work through conflict rather than engaging in disruptive and nonproductive behavior. Participants learn and practice vocabulary development and explore writing/representational opportunities which empower them to express and assert themselves positively and appropriately. This workshop can be adapted for delivery to elementary and middle school students and/or their parents.

  • Raising the Bar: Life Skills for Success in the 21st Century ©
    Students in current urban school communities often wrestle with setting and achieving goals, making good decisions, and confronting conflict with positive resolutions. In this workshop, students learn and practice 21st Century Skills to better prepare them for success in the classroom, in their personal lives, and in the world of work. Topics to be covered include: Identifying, Assessing and Controlling Our Anger; Resolving Our Conflicts Peacefully; and Making Proper Choices to Support the Goals We Set for Ourselves.

  • Young Ambassadors: Tapping Into the Leadership Potential of Your Students ©
    This innovative and field tested program prepares and empowers selected student leaders to become agents of change in their school and community. On-site workshops where students learn and the practice 21st Century Skills necessary for success in today's global community are combined with field trips to businesses. During these field trips students observe and interact with successful individuals who faced and overcame challenges to reach their goals. Students are supported as they work collaboratively to use their new knowledge and experience to create Action Plans which address specific challenges they identify in their school.

    Today's students live and work in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world. This highly interactive workshop explores issues students need to understand, and have the ability to address, if they are to become productive members of our global community. Topics to be covered include: Diversity and Inclusion, Identity, Culture, Stereotyping, and Building Respect. Students work collaboratively to raise their awareness of diversity issues at their school, and learn and practice the skills necessary to lead in an inclusive environment.

    To be successful in today's classroom and the global marketplace, students must master the art of working in teams. Successful teams are composed of individuals who recognize their own worth and acknowledge the value of others. Through interactive activities, students learn and practice how to create and work on teams which maximize every individual members' strengths.

  • Get It Together! Building Community through Teambuilding and Dialogue ©
    We've all heard the adage, "no man is an island". However, in the real world, sometimes there are challenges when interacting with others. Participants in this interactive workshop are led through a series of highly engaging activities which build group cohesion. This is followed by a debriefing to explore the benefits and struggles of working cooperatively with others. (Aligns with the Adult Workshop).

  • Nurturing the Change from Within: Developing Individual Thinkers and Community Leaders ©
    Success in today's schools, communities, and work places requires a new skill set. This highly interactive workshop assists students in developing the requisite skills needed to achieve in these settings. Workshop topics include: Leadership, Communication, Goal Setting, Conflict Management, Values Awareness, Decision Making and Community Building. Through mastery of these skills, students can attain greater academic success, successfully transition from school to the world of work, and develop and maintain healthy relationships in their personal lives. The workshop can be tailored to co-ed or single-gender group.

  • Creating Strong Peer Leaders ©
    Student leaders are often motivated to facilitate workshops on topics they have mastered in our student workshops. This highly interactive workshop builds on that motivation and provides young leaders with the skills necessary to conduct successful workshops for their peers. Topics to be covered include: Basic Facilitation Techniques and Skills, Setting a Positive Tone, Giving Directions, Maintaining Boundaries and Objectivity, Debriefing Activities, and Dealing with Difficult Participants. Students will create Action Plans which identify topics of interest to their peers, and develop timelines for the delivery of these workshops in the school.
